Ecotourism Standards & Guidelines for the National Forest Authority of Uganda

The National Forest Authority of Uganda (NFA) cares for and protects large areas of forest lands across Uganda. Some of these, especially those with old growth forests and significant wildlife, include tourism operations or the potential for tourism.

With funding from the US Forest Service, NatureScapes worked with NFA to develop a consistent set of ecotourism standards and guidelines for all NFA forests.

NFA needed an overarching playbook for managing the tourism they have as well as a process for identifying and forming partnerships for new tourism investments. Naturescapes worked with NFA staff and partners to understand the current systems and protocols and then develop guidelines and standards that built on and enhanced these to standardize tourism procedures across the organization.

The resulting ‘playbook’ provides a clear and comprehensive framework for NFA to plan, develop, manage and partner on tourism activities within its forests in a sustainable way. This is complemented by a suite of tools and templates created by Naturescapes to help NFA implement the guidelines and procedures.
